The Nobel Prize awarding committee had considered Churchill for the literature award several times before he eventually received it in 1953.

After years he was finally given the award. The official citation proclaimed that the prize had been awarded for his mastery of biographical and historical description. Churchill did love the good life and would tolerate no compromise when it came to drinking and smoking. During World War II, he even had his oxygen mask adapted so that he was able to smoke through it.

Churchill was a reader known for his ability to process enormous quantities of text and to instantly grasp its key points. He wrote: “It is a good thing for an uneducated man to read books of quotations… The quotations, when engraved upon the memory, give you good thoughts.” He was quoted in the English language perhaps more than anybody, except for Shakespeare.
